Sparrowhawks do the majority of their hunting during the day. Usually, they will hunt within the first three or so hours of daylight, remaining mostly inactive after late morning.

Female sparrowhawks are typically 25% larger than males, but often twice as heavy.

Sparrowhawks gained full protection in Britain in 1961.

This was partly due to persecution, but also due to pesticide use in agriculture. As well as killing individuals, the accumulation of harmful compounds thinned their eggs, which increased breakages during incubation. This led to a population decline.
